The Courage to Learn
In Afghanistan, where girls above sixth grade are banned from formal education, a quiet revolution is taking place in hidden classrooms across the country. Our Learning Axis teams are supporting a network of secret schools that continue to provide education to thousands of girls determined to learn despite the risks.
A teacher we'll call "Zahra" explains the situation: "Every day we take enormous risks to teach these girls. They come to us in small groups, at different times, through back alleys and hidden entrances. They cover their books in shopping bags and memorize their lessons in case they're stopped. Their courage is extraordinary."
"My daughter risks everything to go to school. She leaves home saying she's visiting a friend, but she carries notebooks hidden in her clothes. When she returns, her eyes shine with knowledge. This education is her only hope for a future. We cannot let them take that away."
